Description

The Fungus Shawl Cardigan Light is a blend of a bolero, a cardigan, and a shawl. It is knitted together under each sleeve like a bolero but has been given some length so that it functions as a cardigan.

Fungus Shawl Cardigan Light features a wide ribbed edge along the neckline and down the fronts, as well as a beautiful moss stitch pattern double-height. The cardigan begins with the ribbed edge that runs along the neck. Stitches for the yoke are picked up in this edge, and the rest of the edge is continued while simultaneously knitting the yoke, fronts, and body.

The yoke is worked back and forth, with increases within the ribbed edge at both ends to form the ties and V-shape of the cardigan, and on each side of shoulder stitches, until the sleeves reach the correct length—around the elbow. From there, the back and the right and left fronts are worked separately. When the armhole reaches the correct depth, stitches are bound off under the armhole on both fronts and back on both sides, while simultaneously knitting the back and fronts together—this is done using a three-needle bind-off. Then, the body is worked back and forth in one piece. The body is finished with an I-Cord edge. The sleeves are also finished with I-Cord edges.

Sizes

XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL/4XL

Finished measurements

The chest width is very flexible due to the ties, which can be adjusted as desired. Therefore, the width of the cardigan's back is measured under the armhole (waist height) from armhole to armhole: approximately 49 (51) 54 (56) 59 (61) 64 cm.

Sleeve length measured along the bound-off stitches under the arm: approximately 21 (21) 21 (22) 22 (22) 23 cm.

Body length measured at center back (CB) including the edge: approximately 61 (63) 66 (69) 71 (73) 74 cm.

The cardigan is designed to have a positive ease of 25-35 cm. If you have broad shoulders and perhaps long arms as well, go up 1-2 sizes. The model in the picture has narrow shoulders and slightly short arms with a bust measurement of approximately 84 cm and is wearing a size XS.

Materials

200 (200) 200 (250) 250 (300) 350 g Alpaca 1 from Isager Yarn (400 m/50 g) or similar alpaca quality, e.g., Baby Alpaca 100% from Smuksak (200 m/25 g) held together with 200 (200) 250 (250) 300 (350) 400 g Trio 1, from Isager Yarn (350 m/50 g).

The cardigan in the picture is knitted in Alpaca 1 in color 0 held together with Trio 1 in color Linen. Both qualities from Isager Yarn.

In addition to yarn, you will need 6 stitch markers — 2 of which should be removable as safety pins.

Recommended needles

The cardigan is knitted in moss stitch pattern double-height back and forth on a circular needle 3 mm (80-100 cm) with 1 strand of Alpaca 1 and 1 strand of Trio 1 held together. The I-Cord edges as finishing for both body and sleeves are also knitted on a 3 mm needle.

Use 2.5 mm double-pointed needles for the part of the edge that runs along the neck — you will need 3 needles.

I also recommend having 2 circular needles size 3 mm, so you can let the stitches that need to rest sit on one circular needle while you continue knitting on the other. Alternatively, you can use a string or a stitch holder.

Gauge

24 sts x 36 rows = 10 x 10 cm in moss stitch pattern doubled in height on 3 mm needles back and forth.
